December 2024: Reflecting on a Year of Impact

As we close the chapter on 2024, the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation celebrates another year of resilience, dedication, and conservation success. This year has brought its share of challenges and triumphs, and we remain steadfast in our mission to protect South Africa’s precious wildlife and ecosystems.

2024: A Year in Review

  • Snares Removed: 4,006 snares were successfully cleared, marking a 1,681 increase from 2023.
  • Distance Patrolled: Our team covered over 713 kilometers on foot and 8,200 kilometers by vehicle across 31 properties.
  • Wildlife Saved: We rescued 3 impalas, 2 spotted hyenas, 2 giraffes, 1 side-striped jackal, and 1 hippopotamus from snares.

These accomplishments have only been possible thanks to the support of our volunteers, donors, and community. Together, we prevented an estimated R60.3 million in losses for landowners, reinforcing the critical role of snare removal in wildlife conservation.

Stories of Hope

One of the most inspiring moments of the year was the rescue of a spotted hyena ensnared by a deadly trap. Thanks to our rapid response team and a skilled veterinarian, this resilient animal was given a second chance. Each rescue serves as a reminder of the importance of combating illegal poaching and protecting vulnerable species.

Education and Collaboration

In 2024, we expanded our outreach efforts, hosting 10 environmental education programs for local and international school groups. Additionally, we assisted in collaring 5 lions, 1 African wild dog, 1 spotted hyena, and 2 African elephants, contributing to critical research and monitoring efforts.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we prepare for 2025, we are filled with hope and determination. Our work is far from over, and with your continued support, we can achieve even greater milestones.

Together, we’re saving lives, preserving ecosystems, and building a sustainable future for wildlife. Thank you for standing with us every step of the way.

From all of us at PNHF, we wish you a joyous festive season and an incredible 2025!
