Putting a tracking collar on one of Africa's most Endangered large carnivores

PNHF volunteers recently had the opportunity to assist putting a tracking collar on a African Wild Dog.

Wild Dogs are one of Africa's most endangered large carnivores, with less than 650 of these animals remaining in South Africa.

It is vitally important for researchers and conservationists to track the movements of these animals to better understand the threats they face in a modern world, rapidly getting too small for them.

A new pack emerged in an area outside of protected reserves, these animals likely split away from a larger pack and dispersed out of their territory.

The Endangered Wildlife Trust, together with local wildlife veterinarians and conservation authorities, set out to try and dart one of the adults of this newly formed pack. PNHF assisted and covered the veterinary costs involved in the operation.

This gave some of our international volunteers and veterinary students the opportunity to get hands on experience with these rare animals.

Want to contribute towards the conservation of Wild Dogs and other species? Watch this space as we will soon be launching a new fundraiser to help collar lions and hyenas in a high risk poaching area.
